The Best STEAM Activities for Kids to Do at Home

Thank you KiwiCo for sponsoring this post. Visit KiwiCo’s website to find the right crate for your child!

I was first introduced to STEAM as a teacher, but if you’re a parent and have started exploring educational avenues for your child, there’s a good chance you’ve heard the acronym, too. As our generation becomes more knowledgeable about the different ways to equip children with both school skills and life skills, STEAM is gaining popularity (and for good reason)!

What is STEAM, Anyway?

STEAM stands for science, technology, engineering, art, and math. It’s an approach that integrates these subjects together to promote critical thinking, curiosity, and creativity. STEAM skills are important for developing a well-rounded little learner who grows to be an innovative, thoughtful problem solver.

How Do I Incorporate STEAM at Home?

With KiwiCo, it’s incredibly convenient to include STEAM activities in your regular routine! KiwiCo is an amazing company that delivers engaging, age-appropriate materials for kids, from infants to teenagers, to play and learn. Depending on your kiddo’s current developmental phase, you’ll have a complete box shipped to you each month with different themes, projects, and challenges. KiwiCo makes it super easy because all of the supplies you need for each activity are included in your crate.

Tell Me More About KiwiCo!

We just got our first KiwiCo crate and I am officially obsessed! My background is in early childhood education so I always get excited when learning is fun for my kids! Based on my daughters’ ages, they both got Koala crates and I can honestly say that they had the best time exploring their STEAM activities.

Belle is two and her first crate was all about the ocean. I expected to help her a lot, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that she needed very limited assistance. I mostly just asked questions while she played to encourage her thought process and communication.

The first activity she did was a sea animal sorting game. Using a fishing pole, she caught felt creatures and put them in categories based on size, color, and animal type.

There was also a precious art project where she decorated a sea turtle and a fish with tissue paper. The animal shapes came with adhesive on one side so her job was to arrange the colors. She loved flipping them over and admiring the finished product!

It came with all of the materials to make farm animal finger puppets, complete with googly eyes, as well as a barn she built to house them in. She gave each animal a unique personality and let her imagination run wild with their adventures.

Her crate also had a cute vegetable garden matching game that she got to assemble. She made vegetables by stringing colorful beads on pipe cleaners and then planted them in a sticker-decorated garden bed. She insisted on playing it with everyone in the house multiple times.

The best thing about our KiwiCo crates is that while STEAM learning is happening, the girls just think they’re playing. The activities can easily be spread over several days, but they were having such a great time that they didn’t want to stop. KiwiCo’s mission is to empower kids not just to make a project, but to make a difference.
