How to Tie-Dye Clothes Without a Kit

We have less than two weeks until school starts and we are so close to checking everything off of our Summer Bucket List! One of the last activities we had was to tie-dye some clothes!

Instead of spending money on new white shirts and a colorful kit, I was inspired by Whats Up Moms to go the reverse tie-dye route and use a bleach solution. They have a full video on their youtube page, but you basically do this:

  1. Grab some old shirts or dresses, darker colors work best. Twist the clothes up and wrap them with rubber bands.
  2. Mix equal parts bleach and water in a squirt bottle. Pour or spray the bleach solution on the clothes. My application was completely random, but you can definitely attempt to make a cool pattern or design.
  3. Let the items dry and then cut off the rubber bands. You’ll notice the colors change more as time passes and the bleach sits longer.
  4. Wash and dry clothes completely before wearing!

Since I was using bleach, my children we strictly spectators. They helped me twist up the rubber bands, but otherwise were hands-off!

Also, make sure you do this outside or in a well-ventilated area. Bleach is not a pleasant smell!

The girls were so impressed by our tie-dyed clothes! We made a tank top for Goose and a dress for Belly and they have been asking to wear them every day! It was so easy, I’m tempted to do more garments!
