I have another adorable craft to share with you: mosaic rainbows! This is an interactive way for young kids to learn colors, work on cutting skills, and practice following directions.
We’ve had tons of rain lately and with St. Patrick’s Day next week, this activity felt more than appropriate. It was awesome because the girls are fascinated by rainbows and we already had all of the materials we needed!
Materials
- scissors
- glue
- construction paper in each color of the rainbow (we didn’t have indigo, but we had a discussion about it being part of the rainbow, too)
- cotton balls
- rainbow template- I cut our rainbows out of a Goldfish box, but you can use paper, cardstock, or whatever you have on hand! I also drew colored arcs on our rainbows so that the girls would have a guide to follow.
Instructions
One color at a time, give your kiddos a square of construction paper. Let them cut small pieces and glue them onto the corresponding arc on their rainbow. We started with red and worked our way down to violet. Your kids can cut any type of abstract shape, perfection is not the goal!
I originally wanted to make tear art rainbows, but Belly is going to be three soon and I figured it wouldn’t hurt to start getting her comfortable with scissors. Although she was so excited to actually do some cutting, her sweet little hands got tired after a few snips and she called on reinforcements (aka my husband) to help her out. If your kiddos aren’t ready for scissors, feel free to tear the paper instead!
After all of the colors are glued on, stick some cotton balls on the bottom to make fluffy clouds.
As I mentioned, this was a little bit tedious for Belly because she’s two. She took a couple of breaks while working on her rainbow and that was totally fine. Goose, on the other hand, is four and was completely focused and determined until she finished.
You definitely should make mosaic rainbows with your little ones! I may be biased because I always love my girls’ artwork, but I’m so obsessed with how precious their rainbows are!
