Ditch the Messy Bun and Embrace Your Beautiful Mom Hair

I have been a parent for 3.5 years and somewhere in this time, messyĀ mom hair became my way of life. Unbrushed, unwashed, haphazardly tossed into a hair tie. Between sleep deprivation, wiping bottoms, and quickly getting tiny humans out of the door in a less than orderly fashion, I just accepted that my appearance was not paramount.

I already have a husband. Who was I trying to impress? No one noticed or cared how I looked.

Or so I told myself.

Truth was, it was easier to make excuses for my disheveled-ness than to actually exert any effort to look more put together.

Well, one day my daughters were playing dress up in their room. Goose came out pushing a shopping cart, plastic cell phone pressed against her ear, sunglasses covering her ā€œtiredā€ eyes, and my trucker hat atop her unbrushed hair. She smiled proudly and said, ā€œLook, Iā€™m a Mommy!ā€

At first, I laughed because she was hilariously accurate. But then I started feeling embarrassed because I realized that this unkempt, preoccupied manner is how my children see me. It was a harsh reminder that theyā€™re always watching me and following my example. My lack of concern for my own self-care was sending the message that it was acceptable for them to not care about themselves, too.

At that moment I became determined to start making changes and be a better role model for my girls, starting with my mom hair. I told myself that not only would I wash my hair with some regularity, but I also vowed to do away with messy buns. I didn’t have a plan, but it was going to happen!

My prayers were answered a few days later when I got an email from a new company called Formulate asking if I was interested in testing their hair products. Ummā€¦ Yes, please!

Formulate creates one-of-a-kind, personalized hair products. Itā€™s all about caring for your hair as it is and enhancing what you were born with. Itā€™s honestly one of the coolest things Iā€™ve ever used.

To get started, you complete a survey online all about your hair. It asks about everything from color and length to texture and thickness. They even factor in the climate where you live! My mom is Filipina and my dad is black so I have long, thick, frizzy, kinky hair. And we live in South Carolina now so thereā€™s a big humidity factor.

After the program learns about your hair, it asks about your hair goals. I shared that I wanted to focus most on my curl definition, growth, and hydration. I also got to choose my scent preference and how potent I wanted it to be.

From that information, they create a totally customized shampoo and conditioner just for you and have it delivered to your doorstep. If for some reason youā€™re unhappy with your products, theyā€™ll create a new custom formula for you to try, free of charge.

Iā€™ve been using my personalized products for just over a month and I could not be happier with the results. My hair is noticeably softer, more manageable, and longer already. I have never used a shampoo and conditioner that worked more perfectly for my unique hair type or that smells this fantastic!

One great thing is that aside from remembering to wash my hair every few days, I donā€™t actually spend more time on it. My Formulate products just take my natural hair traits and amplify them. No tools or gels. I literally just let it dry.

Ta-da: New and improved mom hair!

Before Formulate, I always wanted to hide my hair in a messy bun or under a hat. Somedays it isn’t practical to have my hair in my face, but now that my curls are so much stronger and healthier, I want to wear it down.

While I have been getting a ton of compliments about the way my hair looks, the most exciting part is that Iā€™m finally able to set a positive example of hair love for my daughters. Itā€™s so much easier to model hair acceptance when you use the right products. My hope is that they see me rocking my natural mom hair with confidence and learn to appreciate their own beautiful curls.

  1. I love this! Since I became a Mom, messy bun/updo has been my go-to as well. I will definitely check this brand out and enter your giveaway. Thank you šŸ˜Š.

    1. Thank you, Nikki! There are definitely occasions that still call for a messy bun, but Formulate has given me so much confidence to wear my hair down. Good luck winning the giveaway!

  2. Wow, your hair looks so beautiful! Iā€™m guilty of the mom hair for so long, I am finally taking the time to do my hair and it makes me so happy šŸ¤—

  3. You rock, Mama! And your hair looks fab. I don’t rock the messy bun/ponytail unless it’s summer and it’s HOT (too hot down on my neck!), but yes, having it look good is so nice even just for day to day life!
