Before I even had kids, I knew that I wanted to create a Montessori playroom in our home! I studied the Montessori method in college and have always loved how it fosters a child’s inquisitive nature.

What is Montessori?

The basic idea behind the Montessori approach is that your child’s learning should be self-directed and hands-on. Children are encouraged to learn through purposeful play and make discoveries at their own pace. The adult’s job is to prepare the environment and act as a guide, but there isn’t any strict, formal instruction.

As a teacher, I appreciate that Montessori spaces are designed to expose children to a variety of stimuli (textures, shapes, sizes, colors) and that analytical thinking is emphasized.

What Does a Montessori Playroom Need?

I just joined an amazing program for babies and toddlers called Monti Kids and it’s helping me build the Montessori space that I’ve always wanted!

Make sure that each toy has a designated spot on the shelf so that your child knows where to return it when they’re ready to clean up.

Books

We love books so we probably have more on our shelf than recommended, but have a handful that your child can take out and put back independently. Like the toys, rotate your books so that your child continues to be engaged.
