The Softest Homemade Playdough

After a couple of years of trial and error, I have finally perfected my recipe for soft homemade playdough! It uses ingredients that we usually have in our kitchen and the steps are really easy to follow. Every single batch we’ve made has been flawless and I highly suggest you try it with your little ones!

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup water
  • juice from half of a lemon
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/4 cup salt
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • food coloring (optional)

Instructions

  1. Mix the water and lemon juice together in a bowl and microwave it until it’s boiling. It takes about 2.5 minutes in my microwave.
  2. While the liquid is heating up, combine the flour and salt together in a separate bowl.
  3. Take your water and lemon juice mixture out of the microwave. If you want to color your playdough, add a few drops of food coloring to the bowl now.
  4. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix it with a spoon or spatula.
  5. Add the oil to the bowl and continue mixing until everything is completely combined.
  6. Let the dough cool completely before playing. This step is very important! If you try to manipulate the warm dough, it’ll be too sticky and you’ll be very tempted to add more flour (which will ruin it). Just let it come to room temperature for about 30-ish minutes and then the consistency will be perfect!
  7. Play!
  8. Store your playdough in an airtight container and it should last for months and months!homemade playdough, playdough recipes without cream of tarter, soft playdough recipe, preschool activitieshomemade playdough, playdough recipes without cream of tarter, soft playdough recipe, preschool activities

I originally started experimenting with homemade playdough because I am not a fan of storebought. I think that storebought has a really unpleasant odor and it can dry out too quickly, even when stored correctly. Homemade playdough is also less expensive and lasts for much longer.

And I tried to Google all of the ingredients in Play-Doh brand products and it looks like their formula is top secret. I don’t know about you, but I’m way more comfortable giving my kids something to play with when I know how it’s made.

I can’t encourage you enough to give this homemade playdough a try! You’ll never need to buy any again!

If your kiddos love making things, you should definitely try tear art and cereal box manicures!

Talk to you soon!
