DIY Holiday Crayons (Made In the Microwave)

The Cinnamon Mom, stay at home mom bloggerIf you’re gathering simple, festive ideas to keep your kiddos occupied all December, add these DIY holiday crayons to your list! My kids both had so much fun making and coloring with them!

You’ve probably seen lots of cute DIY crayons that were made in the oven, but we’ve found the microwave to be safer for my little helpers. We made heart crayons for Valentine’s Day last year and learned that the microwave is just as effective at melting the wax.

To get started, I had my kids grab a couple of handfuls of red, green, and white crayons. If you’ve been hoarding broken crayons, this is a great time to repurpose them.

I picked up the candy silicone mold in Dollar Tree’s Christmas section, but Amazon also has great molds for every season and occasion. Christmas trees, gifts, and snowman would also make adorable crayon shapes!

Instructions

  1. Peel the paper off of the crayons.
  2. Break or cut the crayons into roughly half-inch pieces. You should be able to break skinny crayons with your hands, but bigger crayons may require a knife.
  3. Fill the mold with the crayon pieces.
  4. Microwave the mold in 5-minute increments until the wax starts to melt together. If you let the wax heat for too long, it’ll get too runny and you won’t see the separate colors in the crayons. It took about 15 minutes for us, but it may take more or less time depending on how old your crayons are, the size of the pieces, and how powerful your microwave is. This is a great chance for your kids to make observations and discuss how the crayons are changing as time passes.
  5. Let the wax cool and harden for 30 minutes. You can put the mold in the freezer if you want to speed things along.
  6. Carefully pop the crayons out and start coloring!
