As a former kindergarten teacher and current homeschooling mommy, I am passionate about incorporating hands-on crafts into my kids’ weekly routine! Crafts stimulate creativity and fine motor growth and instill a love for exploration. There are several Klutz crafts, all with different themes and materials, but the one we tried this time is called Bio Chem Creatures. It’s designed for children ages 7-10 and encourages them to experiment with kid-safe chemicals while studying gooey neon creatures. Believe me when I say this kit takes slime to a new level. It isn’t too messy, but it teaches kids to manipulate bio ooze in unexpected ways.
The kit came with all the supplies needed, including a thorough instruction manual, which made it incredibly convenient and straightforward. There are enough materials to customize six creatures and the kit walks you through every single step, from setting up a scientific laboratory to proper disposal of your ooze.
My first grader is an adept reader so she had no problem following the manual independently, but she was excited and wanted me to stay close to show off how much fun she was having.
The steps directed her to carefully mold the slimy ooze into creatures and then transfer them to a bowl of a primordial solution to firm. Once the colorful blobs could be handled, she moved them to the specimen tubes for even closer observation, watching them wiggle and bounce around. She also got to decorate her creatures with eyes, “guts”, and stickers, which might have been her favorite part. It was amazing seeing her focus as she measured and mixed. She was so proud of herself!
I was impressed to see that this kit is also an excellent tool to learn about wildlife. Throughout the instruction manual, there are sections filled with facts that relate the ooze-y creature experiments to real animals and their life cycles. I thought those connections were important and I love that they made them so clear for kids.
Klutz crafts are great for every child and lifestyle! Homeschooling families can easily use this kit to supplement studies about chemistry or animal science. For children who attend school during the day, Klutz makes an awesome afternoon or weekend enrichment activity. It would also be a special, purposeful gift for a birthday or holiday. The kit could easily be spread over several days because there’s so much to learn and do. I can’t imagine a child not being fascinated!
