Managing the Mental Load of Motherhood During the Holidays

Just sitting here overthinking all of the things I have to do between now and Thanksgiving… Which we’re hosting and is in 8 days. And I have done absolutely nothing to prepare for.

*shrugs shoulders*

Even though we’re headed into the most wonderful time of the year, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed or inadequate, especially as mommies. The mental load of motherhood during the holidays is amplified as we attempt to create magical memories for everyone around us.

Shopping, cooking, cleaning, decorating… Each little item is fine by itself, but the list quickly adds up!

I’ve adopted a more relaxed perspective this year, but I know a lot of mamas who get really stressed out. If you’re having a hard time, I just want to remind you that it’s okay if you don’t totally have your life together. We’re all a mess, join the party.

And it’s okay if you need to take a break or ask for help. You’d be surprised how many people are willing to step in when you speak up. Our family is keeping Thanksgiving very potluck-style this year so the stress will be evenly distributed.

Also, try not to put unnecessary pressure on yourself. The holidays are not a competition and your loved ones, especially your children, just want your presence.

And most importantly, always prioritize your health and your happiness. You can’t feel successful or productive when you’re not at your best. This thought is on repeat in my head: “Taking care of yourself is the most important part of taking care of others.”
